A Path to Resolution

What is Mediation?

Mediation is a confidential process using trained, neutral third-party mediators to assist people in conflict with resolving their disputes. Mediation helps people to discuss breakdowns in communication, confusion of roles and expectations, as well as options for making changes in behaviors and attitudes that have led to conflict. Mediators ensure that everyone present has a say in how to resolve the conflict.

Discussion topics can include:
Landlord-tenant concerns, businesses and consumer interactions, monies owed or debts, return of property, loans, neighbors, personal injury, contracts, conflict in a workplace, strategic planning, roles and responsibilities, team building coaching, communications, estate issues, elder care, family relationships, co-parenting, pets, noise, property, traffic and any concerns important to you.

► Court-referred cases are generally subsidized through contracts with the Supreme Court of Virginia.
► Non-court referred mediation services are provided using sliding scale fees to help ensure the availability of mediation to low and moderate-income families.

Courts Served
• Harrisonburg-Rockingham GDC and JDR
• Augusta County GDC and JDR
• Staunton GDC andJDR • Waynesboro GDC and JDR

Exploring the Inner Workings of Mediation

How Family Mediation works

Families can:
– Voice their worries and say what they see as the problem(s)
– Break down misunderstandings and identify issues to be discussed
– Clarify ways the situation could change and identify steps towards making those changes
– Find new ways of dealing with conflict that can be used if future problems occur

Discussion topics can include:
Parenting responsibilities and decision making, sharing time, financial concerns, separation, parent teen, educational plans and progress, health and medical concerns, extended family, relationships, communications, estate issues, elder care, and any concerns important to you.

Mediators record your points of agreement, and a written document that each person feels is fair, balanced, realistic, and accurately reflects the issues, is formed.

Can my Attorney attend the Mediation?
You are welcome to bring your attorney to the mediation. If your attorney is not present and you reach an agreement, you are welcomed to consult with him/her before you sign the agreement.
